Each lesson has a teacher video which explains the aims of the lesson, a brief outline and provide tips, PLUS a separate student video which you can show your class.
The student video shows the GarageBand steps in full and you can pause, rewind and replay when needed! While the student video is “teaching your class”, you are free to provide one-on-one help to students that need it most.
Here’s a sneak peek at the lessons that are available inside the course right now:
A quick and easy lesson in which students sample their name, compose a rhythm and add a drum backing.
This lesson is a great "getting-to-know" activity for the beginning of the school year. Write and record a rap using the provided structure and compose a rhythmic backing.
Take the standard blues progression, transform it into a non-blues style and improvise a solo using one, two or many notes!
Use GarageBand's world instruments to learn about the Erhu and Guzheng, then compose a pentatonic-based accompaniment and melody.
The Song Made With No Instruments
Record found sounds and body percussion and turn them into drums, bass guitar, keyboard and other instruments!
Superhero Themes (easy film scoring project!)
Explore the compositional techniques that go into a superhero theme, compose your own version and synchronise it to a short movie clip (clip is provided).

"I have learned many shortcuts that I never knew existed. Even my pupils were unaware of most of them!"
"The Music Teachers’ Guide to Garageband is absolutely brilliant. Katie takes you through many topics in a step-by-step format. I have learned many shortcuts that I never knew existed. Even my pupils were unaware of most of them! Like all Katie’s training, nothing is left unturned. It is always my go-to resource for anything involving music tech and, if I cannot find the answer myself, I know Katie and her team are only an email away. I am a subscriber to lots of communities but, I can honestly say, this is my favourite. Worth every penny (as we say in the UK!). Long may it continue."

GarageBand is one of the most versatile apps on your iPad and capable of much more than you might think. I’m pleased to share this course with you so that you can learn some of its “hidden” features and discover exciting ways to use it creatively with your students.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this course only for the iOS version of GarageBand? Does it apply the Mac/desktop version, too?
The course has been designed specifically for the iOS app version of GarageBand and all the tutorials and lesson videos show the iPad version. A number of the lessons could be adapted for the Mac desktop version but the iPad version of GarageBand has some features that do not appear in the desktop version (and vice versa) so you would need to bear that in mind. There is a separate course designed for the desktop version of GarageBand inside the Midnight Music Community which is more suitable if you are working with that version.
Which version of GarageBand is this course based on? Does it apply if I have an old version?
The course is based on the current version of GarageBand (2019). If you have old iPads can not be updated to iOS 10 or higher, your version of GarageBand will not be the same as the ones shown in the videos and some features may also be different or missing. Many of the lessons will still work with this earlier version, but you will need to be comfortable with adapting them for your own use.
What’s the difference between purchasing the standalone course and accessing the course inside the Midnight Music Community?
The standalone course option gives you access to ONLY the GarageBand iPad course/lesson plans. You pay a one-off fee and can access the materials on an ongoing basis. If you choose to sign up to the Midnight Music Community, you will have access to the same course and set of lessons PLUS you will be able to access ALL of the other courses, training materials, lesson plans and other resources that make up the MMC . In addition, you will be able to post any music tech-related questions inside our online forum and you’ll receive a reply from a music tech expert or like-minded teacher. Access to the MMC is available via an affordable recurring subscription and you can cancel at anytime.
How long will I have access to the course and lesson materials?
If you choose the stand-alone course option you will have ongoing access to all of the course and lesson materials. You can watch and re-watch the videos as many times as you like. If you join the Midnight Music Community, you will have access to this course (and ALL of the other MMC training materials and lesson plans) for as long as your membership is current.
My students have iPad Minis or iPhones - is the GarageBand app still the same?
The GarageBand iOS app functions in essentially the same way on all iOS devices. On the iPad Mini, GarageBand is the same as on the larger size iPads. Some aspects of the app layout vary on the smaller screen of the iPhone so you might need to dig a little to find feature you need!
I only have access to a small number of iPads - will the lesson plans work with groups of students?
The lessons can work with small groups, pairs of students and individual students. Adaptations are mentioned in each written lesson plan.
When is the course running? Do I need to log in at a specific time?
This course and lesson plan videos are pre-recorded which means you can move at your own pace. You can watch and re-watch the videos as many times as you like and you don't need to be online at a specific time.
What if I'm a beginner? And a "technophobe"??
Then you will be amongst friends :) The training courses assume no prior knowledge and everything is explained clearly, without "tech-speak" or jargon. I can guarantee that as soon as you join, you'll find activities and lessons that you can use in class the very next day.
Do you offer a professional development certificate for this course?
Yes! We will provide you with a certificate that outlines the contact hours for the course. Because every region or district has different criteria for awarding professional development credits, we are not able to issue universally recognised graduate credit for the training courses. We do, however, issue a certificate of completion which states the number of hours that were spent completing the training materials in the online course. You can then submit the certificate/s to your teaching association or district for approval.
