Looking for More Resources for Music Teachers?
Hello! I’m Katie Argyle – an Australian music technology trainer and consultant with a passion for helping music teachers through my business Midnight Music.
I’m a qualified teacher but no, I don’t currently teach in a school. I help teachers through my online professional development space – the Midnight Music Community – where there are tutorial videos, courses, links and downloadable resources.
I like to focus on easy ways to incorporate technology into what you are already doing in your music curriculum through a range of creative projects. I also run live workshops and have presented at countless conferences and other music education events.
If you want simple, effective ideas for using technology in music education, I would LOVE to help you inside the Midnight Music Community.

Hi, Katie!
I’m an elementary school Band Director and instrumental music instructor in the US. Thank you for all the free resources – they are so good! I was considering subscribing, EXCEPT I’m retiring in two weeks so wouldn’t be able to put them into practice. But I have a question I hope you’ll be able to help me with:
During the current school shutdown, I’ve continued to hold small group lessons. To increase participation and interaction (well, sort of,) I ask students to submit Flipgrid videos of their playing. Most of the kids (grades 4,5 &6) love to do this so I have lots and lots of wonderful videos. With retirement looming, I’d like to use these videos in a presentation I can distribute to parents and staff to make up for the loss of our 9 Spring performances. I know that Flipgrid allows you to create “playlists” but I particularly like your idea of having student-performed background music tied to photos and video shots. So my question is, If I download the Flipgrid videos, is there a way to separate the audio from each of them and then use them to create the background music?
Thanks for your advice!
Andrea
Great question Andrea! Yes, once you have downloaded the videos if you import them into video editing software (many options…iMovie, WeVideo, Screenflow, Camtasia, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier etc) then you can separate the audio from the video. In many software applications, that happens automatically and you can see audio and video on separate tracks. Then, you can usually save your project as “audio only” (export the audio portion without the video). Hope that helps and congratulations on your almost retirement!
Katie,
Your resources and ideas are really great. I am pretty far from my retirement though, lol! Anyways, I am ok with the tech stuff but I am new on the pyp and myp Ib methodology, and I am considering subscribe to your lesson plans resources if you have in your course and I am going to test using one of your plan examples with chromelabs fro year 5.
On this covide19 online teaching and learming we try to keep the students engaged on music learning and we know as they dont have instruments at home some, we have to use technology to fill this gap, right. And I beleive they will like it. Thank you for your tips and ideas, sincerely, Denis
Thanks for the kind comments Denis 🙂 Good luck with it all!
