Back at the end of January on my Midnight Music Facebook page, I posted a question which was:
“What music tech projects are you currently working on in the classroom?”
Carole Corman – a teacher from Canada – commented and said “For the first time, I am trying out centers/stations using iPads, computers and keyboards. Very interesting!”
For those of you that don’t know, the use of centers or stations in classrooms is similar to a circuit training class in a gym: teachers set up multiple activities around the room which are designed to run concurrently. Small groups of students work at each center and then rotate to the next center at a time designated by the teacher.
I’ve been wanting to put together a training session for my community on the subject of centers in the music classroom and have been looking for examples that involve technology, so when Carole left her comment on the Facebook post I asked if she could share some more information.
Carole ended up emailing me a few days later to let me know what she had been doing. She gave me so much interesting information that I asked her whether she would like to come on the podcast and share what she has been trying out with her students.
Things mentioned during the episode:
- Original Facebook post: what music tech projects are you currently working on?
- New Pedagogies for Deep Learning
- The Young Minds for The Future expo video I mentioned which showcases some Australian students at schools using the NPDL framework (including the girl who made an automatic dog-feeder!)
- In Carole’s “Appreciate” center she uses Luigi’s Listening Lab on computers
- Video for beginner keyboard players: C is to the left of the two black keys
- Loopy HD iPad app
If you are a member of the Midnight Music Community, look out for some extra information in a special members-only download on the centers that Carole is running with her students.
