Updated and expanded free, transparent guitar chord diagrams!
A number of years ago I shared a free collection of clipart notation images and a music teacher at a P-9 school here in Melbourne suggested that I create a similar collection of guitar chord diagrams. He spends quite a bit of time creating lead sheets and presentation-style documents that feature guitar chord diagrams alongside lyrics. He also suggested I include ukulele chord diagrams as well, but I’ll have to save that for next time! [UPDATE: you can find the ukulele chord diagrams here]
About the chord diagrams
The first time I put this collection together, I decided to include chords I, ii, IV, V and vi in a range of keys. The keys represented were: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, B flat, E flat and A flat. In this latest version of the collection, the chord library has been expanded and there are now 92 chord diagrams.
Of course there are multiple ways to play each of the chords and just one option has been shared here. I have included a blank fretboard image though so you can create your own diagrams, or you can distribute it to students so they can write out their own chord diagrams (a good learning/reinforcement experience in itself!).
Also included in the collection are two generic power chord diagrams – one on the E string and one on the A string. You can let students know which fret they should use for the power chord shape.
Each chord diagram has a transparent background so you can use it on coloured documents and presentations.
A few examples of use
7 ways to use your guitar chord diagrams
1. To create leadsheets using Google Docs, Word or Pages
2. To create a guitar chord quiz
3. To create posters for your music classroom
4. To add into your interactive whiteboard software
5. To make a “play-along” Google Slides, Powerpoint or Keynote presentations (each line of a song with lyrics and chords on separate slides)
6. To make guitar chord flashcards
7. To use in screencasting/whiteboard apps on the iPad
Can I use the images for commercial purposes?
Yes, as long as you credit Midnight Music in your product details and link back to this blog as your source. However, you are not allowed to share individual image files or this library in its entirety. In other words, you may use the files and images in a design, but you may not share the files themselves.
Educators, you may share these files with your students, but it must be protected behind a login of some kind, such as a classroom portal or via email. Please do not post these files by themselves on a publicly accessible website or platform.

Do you have G/B and D/F# as well? I’ve noticed they’re used quite often and was wondering if you could post them if you have them.

Thanks so much for the Free Guitar Chord Image Library. I´´ m working on a basic guitar course for beginners, and maybe I can use them, if it´ s ok with you. Have a nice day.
Yes absolutely!
Your Guitar chord images have been a godsend: I’ve got many original songs from my younger years. Your chord diagrams are being put to good use. Additionally appreciate the empty diagram for more exotic chords! Thank you!
These are great for me as I can paste these into the header of my lyric sheets for songs where I don’t have a given chord memorized
Can someone help please. When I try to insert a chord diagram they come out in a negative form. And I need it to be black on white to paste into a document.

These images are super helpful! As a beginner guitarist, it can be hard to understand chord shapes and finger placement. Having visual references like these makes it so much easier to learn and practice. Thanks for sharing!
