Coming soon: iPad Projects For The Music Classroom Ebook
The roll-out of iPads in schools around the world continues at a fast pace and my iPad courses (both online and face-to-face) were definitely my most popular during 2012.
The first question most teachers ask me is “What are the best apps for music education?”. It’s funny, but I think a better question would be “What do I want to do with my students and can the iPad help?”. Once you know what you want to do – record a composition, improvise rhythms, explore sound, create program music, remix a song, learn about the orchestra – selecting an app is just the same as choosing the most appropriate tool from a toolbox.
And sometimes the best app choice is not actually a “music” app at all. I often use the storytelling app Sonic Pics in workshops because it’s simple, it allows you to put an image-based story together, and most importantly (for music teachers) is that it allows you to record. Sonic Pics is the sort of app that might already exist on a school iPad image because it’s popular with teachers of many other subject areas, including languages, drama, science, biology, maths and so on.
iPad music projects
Over the past few months I’ve been gathering a list (a rather long list…!) of music projects that can be carried out on iPads which will soon be sold as an ebook: composition tasks, music literacy activities, interactive research and history projects and more. Later on, I hope to create a series of video tutorials to accompany the book.
Most of the ebook projects will best suit schools that have student iPads (either 1:1, or one per 4-5 students), but there will also be ideas for single-iPad classrooms too. Each project will include recommended apps (and there may be more than one choice for the project), step-by-step instructions and samples of student work.
When will it be available?
