Pop Songs for School Ensembles (with 3 or 4 chords)

My “pop songs for school ensembles” collection Pinterest

Are you looking for some new songs for your students to play or sing?

I mentioned my popular Clever Music Videos Pinterest board in an earlier post and today I thought I’d share my Pop Songs for School Ensembles collection. I started this collection because whenever I need a 3 or 4 chord song that has lyrics that will pass the “school-friendly” test, I couldn’t think of any! Having this Pinterest board means I have a handy list of songs anytime I need them.

I’ve collected these songs over time from hearing them on the radio, or sung by my own kids or suggested by other teachers. It’s also been really useful to have a central location that allows me to store the links to Youtube clips.

About the songs

Most of the songs use just 3-4 chords, which makes them suitable for guitars and ukeleles. You may find that some of them need to be transposed to make them more student-friendly, but if you look online, it’s likely that someone has already done the work for you.

Please make sure you use your own judgement before deciding to use the songs at your school.

Some schools are more relaxed about lyric content (and that of the video) than others. Only you know what will be acceptable for your school and your students.

I would love to see your pop songs but there is a statewide block on Pintrest. Is there anywhere I can see them while at school?

      Hi Sharelle,
I was waiting for a Qld teacher to comment about that! Unfortunately I can’t really help there. You could either view them when you get home (off the school network) or set up a personal hotspot at school via your phone if you have one.

    Hi Katie
I have been following this board and have found it so useful – Thank you! Another song you might find helpful is Use Somebody by Kings of Leon.

Thanks Clare! I’ve just added the Kings of Leon song.

I just found Yellow Submarine too – which has only 3 chords – using it with tuned percussion and boomwhackers – put it in a powerpoint for the classroom -with links to historical clips and newsreports about the Beatles visiting Adelaide – kids should have fun with it – and learn something too.
    Love your work

Thanks Robyn! Love the extra support material you’ve suggested.

I think the State Wide block is only from 8am – 4pm (that’s what it is for Facebook so I asume it will be the same). Give it a try outside of those times.
